All-new Audi R8 Rear Wheel Series brings racecar-like performance to the streets in limited production model

  • First Audi production model to feature rear-wheel drive
  • Unique trim details differentiate R8 Rear Wheel Series
  • Limited U.S. production with 320 vehicles

HERNDON, Virginia, July 11, 2018 – The all-new Audi R8 RWS comes to the U.S. market with the first rear wheel drive offering for the brand’s R8 performance model line.  Weighing 110 pounds less than its all-wheel drive counterpart, and featuring a mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive. The R8 RWS joins the Audi Sport lineup as a limited series of 999 units globally, with 320 available in the U.S. It represents the closest link between the Audi R8 LMS GT4 race car and a production vehicle.

“Embodied in every R8 is know-how acquired on the racetrack and from the legacy of endurance racing,” said Filip Brabec, vice president of Product Management. “The R8 RWS takes that one step further by offering our customers the closest production model to a Nürburgring 24-hour race winner, the R8 LMS.”

Specially tuned chassis allows for rear-wheel drive application
Similar to the R8 V10 quattro, the RWS features a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine that produces 532 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, with a top track speed of 199 mph. The RWS weighs less than its all-wheel drive counterpart due in part to the loss of components such as the prop shaft, multi-plate clutch and front differential.

The R8 RWS chassis has been specifically adapted for rear-wheel drive, and the electromechanical power steering - free of torque steer - enables precise handling and driver feedback. For a heightened driving experience, the driver can choose “dynamic” mode in the standard Audi drive select and set the Stabilization Control ESC to “sport.”

Unique design elements
On the exterior, the R8 RWS gains a titanium black optic Singleframe® grille and air intakes, and black exterior mirror housings and exhaust tips. The upper portion of the sideblade is now finished in Mythos black while the lower portion of the blade is painted in body color, all accented by standard red brake calipers. Similar to the R8 LMS GT4, an available RWS exterior body styling package adds red decals that extend from the front hood, over the roof, to the rear of the vehicle.

Inside, the RWS features standard sports seats are appointed in Fine Nappa leather seating surfaces. Refining the performance interior, the available Premium package offers 18-way adjustable power seats with pneumatic side and leg bolsters, an Alcantara headliner, the extended leather package encasing the center console and door armrests in premium leather, the 550 watt Bang & Olufsen® Sound System featuring 13 individual surrounding speakers, high-beam assistant to the standard LED headlights as well as illuminated door sills. For even further definition, an available carbon interior package adds carbon fiber high-gloss surrounds for both the virtual cockpit and the air vents.

In recognition of the limited edition run of the R8 RWS, the dashboard includes a badge “1 of 999,” indicating the limited number of R8 RWS units produced by hand at the Böllinger Höfe R8 factory.  The limited number of available R8 RWS units in the U.S. pays homage to the vehicle’s top track speed of 320 km/h (199 mph).

Unique to the R8 RWS are standard 19” 5-arm-V-spoke design wheels in high-gloss black or available 20” 10-spoke-Y design-forged wheels in high-gloss Anthracite finish.

The R8 RWS is scheduled go on sale in spring 2018 at a starting price of $138,700.
