July 21, 2016 | HERNDON, Virginia – Earlier this year, Audi of America combined its passion for innovation with a commitment to growing the sport of soccer in America to launch the Audi Player Index. Today, Audi has taken this new form of soccer intelligence to the next level with the integration of the live Audi Player Index experience within the MLS App.
The Audi Player Index was first introduced as a league-wide statistic at the onset of the 2016 Major League Soccer season. Now, with the integration of the Audi Player Index into the MLS Match Center and MLS App, fans are able to follow and evaluate players’ movements in near real-time across all MLS matches.
To access the Audi Player Index, download the MLS App on iTunes or GooglePlay with a compatible iPhone or Android device (data rates apply). The Audi Player Index can be found within the MLS App, by clicking schedules and selecting any ongoing or completed match, or by visiting the MLS Match Center.
Using Opta data sources, the Audi Player Index tracks nearly 90 components and 2,000 player actions during each MLS game. Player actions, ranging from goals and assists to crosses, saves, passes, challenges, tackles and more, are calculated in near real-time. The Audi Player Index then considers the position of the player and whether the actions are consistent with that role, as well as the location on the field where each action occurred. The result is a unique, definitive Audi Player Index score assigned to every MLS player at the conclusion of each game.
The live experience, within the MLS Match Center and MLS App, now allows fans to more closely follow their favorite players, while providing in-depth statistics and game-by-game breakdowns using the Audi Player Index scores, creating a more engaging and innovative way to follow the sport of soccer.
Since its introduction, more than 11 million fans have engaged with the Audi Player Index, and millions of viewers have seen statistics integrated as regular components of MLS broadcasts each week. MLS fans have followed along throughout the season, tracking the top weekly performers according to the Index and have even engaged in debates over the MLS message boards.

At the end of the Major League Soccer season, Audi will honor the player with the highest Index score average with the Audi Player Index Award. To be eligible, players must have appeared in at least 24 games—approximately 70 percent of regular season matches—and have played at least 1,530 minutes during the regular season. The winner will be eligible to receive a one-year 2017 Audi R8 V10 Coupe lease.
