At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, Audi unveiled a prototype of the first fully electric series model from Audi. Sporty dynamism, lots of comfort, with a high-range and day-to-day practicality—the prototype made for an electrifying view for the future of Audi.
The test phase of a new vehicle is usually conducted under strict confidentiality; photos are generally not desired during the run-up. In the case of the first purely electrically driven series model from Audi, it’s all a little different: the prototypes do not exclusively complete their tests at protected or secret locations around the globe. No, some of the nearly 250 test vehicles deliberately appear to the public up until the world premiere. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland, the prototype of the first fully electric series model was not only presented to the audience at the Audi press conference, but test vehicles also roamed the streets of the city at the beginning of the event.
The prototype’s special camouflage film proved to be a real eye-catcher in this campaign. With a detail carrying a message: Audi is going all in on all-electric in 2018. This message is conveyed via a two-dimensional design of horizontal dynamism and vertical pixel shifts. The lettering covers the entire width of the vehicle and the roof. Orange design elements are inspired by commonly seen high-voltage networks, illustrating that the prototype is fully electric. With colorful inlays, the expressive sills show where the battery and, consequently, the energy center of the car can be found. But it is under the camouflage wrapping where the vehicle truly stands out.
What hides beneath is a sporty SUV with room for five people, as well as plenty of cargo space. The range, suitable for long distances, and integrated charging provides the freedom to drive under electric power alone—without having to compromise. The series version of the vehicle can be charged with up to 150 kW of charging power at fast-charging stations. Making the e-tron prototype charged for the next long-distance haul in as little as 30 minutes. Plus, electric quattro® ushers four-wheel drive into a new age of mobility and ensures a strong performance—even under challenging conditions.
Nearly 250 prototypes of the first purely electrically driven series model from Audi are used for testing, with 188 of them sporting the special e-tron camouflage wrap. Together, they will travel more than five million kilometers—the equivalent of around 125 trips around the earth and approx. 85,000 hours of operation. And all without an ounce of gasoline. That’s progress in a wrap.
